All students in grades 7 and 8 are eligible to participate in middle school athletics at the school they attend. These programs provide opportunities for skill development and competition within the middle school setting.

In addition, the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) requires each school district to identify and designate which high schools serve as continuation schools for students progressing from middle school to high school athletics. In Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS), these continuation schools are referred to as pathway schools. This designation is critical because it determines eligibility for participation in high school sports programs.

Although these programs are classified as high school athletics and must adhere to all MSHSL standards, including academic eligibility and conduct expectations, there are circumstances where students in grades 7 and 8 may be permitted to participate in high school sports. This opportunity is intended to support student-athletes whose skills and readiness align with high school-level competition, while maintaining fairness and compliance with league rules.

7th & 8th grade student eligibility for high school athletic participation is based on one of two options:

1. Pathway School Enrollment – Students may participate in the high school athletic program associated with their designated pathway school, as determined by the district’s continuation plan.
2. Zoned School Attendance – Students may participate in the athletic program at the high school for which they are geographically zoned, based on their home address.

It is important to note that once students reach 9th grade, they must participate in athletics at the high school they attend. This means that some students may compete for a different high school during 7th and 8th grade than the one they will represent in high school. This transition is normal and reflects the district’s commitment to providing opportunities for younger athletes while maintaining clear eligibility standards.
